How long should a business computer last? It’s a question that sounds simple but has real implications for security, productivity, and total cost of ownership. - Servers: 5–7 years, depending on workload and vendor support. Microsoft’s support timelines for server operating systems are often the binding constraint — once an OS reaches end-of-life, the security calculus changes regardless of hardware condition.
- Network equipment (switches, access points): 5–7 years, reviewed against current security standards. Equipment that was current in 2018 may have unpatched vulnerabilities today.
- Firewalls: Follow the vendor’s support lifecycle closely. A firewall running end-of-life firmware is a security liability regardless of its physical age.
The Security Case for Timely Replacement
The performance argument for replacing aging hardware is intuitive — nobody needs to be told that an 8-year-old machine with a spinning hard drive is slow. The security argument is less obvious but more urgent. Older hardware often cannot run current operating system versions. A machine that can’t run Windows 11 is a machine running Windows 10, which Microsoft no longer supports. End of support means no more security patches — and no more security patches means known vulnerabilities remain permanently open.
In a managed environment, we can extend useful life somewhat through careful configuration and security hardening. But there is a floor below which software cannot compensate for hardware limitations, and operating near that floor exposes the business to risks that competent management cannot fully mitigate.
