Have you ever logged onto your computer on a Wednesday morning and found your Microsoft products acting up? If you have, Patch Tuesday might be the source of your troubles.

Patch Tuesday, also known as, ‘Update Tuesday’ is the unofficial terminology used in the IT industry describing Microsoft’s weekly releases of software patches for its products.

In North America, Patch Tuesday occurs on the second and sometimes the fourth Tuesday of each month. Microsoft has a pattern of releasing a larger number of updates on even-numbered months and smaller updates on odd numbered months.

Occasionally, Microsoft does release minor updates outside of Patch Tuesday, and there are always daily updates which include refreshers for Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials.

This ‘Patch Tuesday Method’ was introduced by Microsoft to cut costs of distributing patches along with allowing a day for system administrators to prepare for any issues that may occur. This day has been coined ‘Exploit Wednesday.’

Microsoft believed Tuesday was the optimal day to release the patches because it gives the maximum amount of time to fix any issues that may arise while leaving Monday free to address any issues that may have occurred over the weekend.

Therefore on Wednesday’s if you notice some unknown issues that weren’t previously there, this may be due to Patch Tuesday updates.
